Fine line and blackwork sit at opposite ends of the same craft. One is delicate, the other bold. Most people arrive knowing the image they want but not which of the two should carry it.
Both are styles we work in at our tattoo studio in Uluwatu. Here is how they differ.
What fine line is
Fine line uses thin, precise lines, light shading and plenty of open skin inside the design.
It suits botanicals, script, small symbols and anything delicate.

What blackwork is
Blackwork leans on solid black and confident outlines. Ornamental panels, bold animals, geometric work and cover-ups often fall into this style.
It is bold and graphic, and it reads clearly from a distance.

Which suits your design?
- Small, delicate designs where subtlety is the point: fine line.
- Bold, graphic designs, or pieces you want to stand out: blackwork.
- Designs with delicate detail inside a strong frame: a mix of the two.
Size and placement matter too. Your artist can tell you which style suits your idea and where it will sit best.
What it costs
At our studio, minimalist and black and grey pieces both start at IDR 1 million for a small piece (5cm or less). The full price list is on our tattoo page. Price may vary depending on design detail, placement and time required.

Combining the two
Plenty of designs use both, with fine line detail inside a bolder blackwork frame. Talk to your artist if you want to mix the two.
