A first tattoo feels like a big step, but most of it comes down to planning. Knowing what to expect takes most of the nerves out of it.

Here is what is worth knowing before you book at our tattoo studio in Uluwatu, in the order it tends to matter.

1. Bring a reference, not a finished design

You do not need to arrive with artwork. A few reference images, a rough size in centimetres and the spot on your body are enough to start.

Your artist will work with you on the design.

If you are choosing between two ideas, bring both and talk them through with your artist.

2. Think about placement

Where the tattoo goes affects how it looks, how visible it is day to day, and how comfortable the session feels. Some areas are more sensitive than others.

If comfort is a concern, talk it through with your artist when you plan the design.

3. How long it takes

Session length depends on size, style and detail.

Your artist can give you an idea of timing when you plan the design.

4. What it actually costs

Price depends on style and size. A minimalist piece under 5cm starts at IDR 1 million, a 10 to 15cm piece is IDR 5 million, and realism or full colour starts at IDR 3 million for something small.

On our price list, a full sleeve is IDR 25 million and a full back IDR 40 million.

The complete breakdown sits on the tattoo page, and price may vary depending on design detail, placement and time required.

5. On the day

  • Come rested and have something to eat beforehand.
  • If you have any health concerns, mention them to your artist before your session, and check with your doctor if you are unsure.
  • Wear clothing that gives easy access to the area, and bring something you do not mind getting ink on.
  • Bring headphones if you like music during your session.

Follow your artist’s aftercare advice

How you look after a new tattoo matters. Follow the aftercare advice your artist gives you for your tattoo.

If your trip involves a lot of surf, sea or sun, tell your artist when you book so they can advise you on timing.
